NGC Gearboxes for Taipei Wanda Subway Project Delivered On Time

Publish Date: 2022-06-29

In December 2021, the Rail Transit Business Unit of NGC won an order for subway gearboxes on Taipei’s Wanda-Zhonghe-Shulin Line (“Wanda Line”). Before that, Taipei Metro had mostly used foreign gearbox brands. Our gearbox recently passed the client’s first inspection, and was delivered on June 17, 2022.

In addition, we have signed a contract with another Taiwan project -- the Taoyuan RTS Green Line, and the first batch of gearboxes is expected to be delivered in 2024.

The Wanda Line is a medium capacity line of the Taipei Metro currently under construction, with a total length of 22.1 kilometers and 22 stations, running through the two cities of Taipei and New Taipei City. The line is being constructed in two phases, with a total of 35 vehicles, and is expected to be put into operation in 2025 and 2028. The construction of this line will effectively ease the ground traffic congestion in central Taipei, provide better public transportation, and satisfy the transportation needs of the downtown areas of Zhongzheng and Wanhua.

The PDM490 series dual-stage subway gearbox used in this project was independently developed and designed by NGC. This gearbox model has been widely used in subway systems in Amsterdam, Guadalajara, and Barcelona, garnering significant praise from end-users.

High accuracy, high reliability, lightweight

The PDM490 gearbox is a subway gearbox developed and upgraded in strict accordance with customer specifications, and is based on several years of advanced design and production experience. In order to meet customer requirements for high accuracy and high reliability, NGC’s subway gearbox uses advanced gear modification technology, which greatly improves the carrying capacity of the gears and significantly reduces noise to meet strict requirements for service life and noise. In addition, nonlinear finite element analysis technology is applied in the lightweight design of the gearbox to improve power density.

Flawless start up and operation at ambient temperatures between -20℃ and 50℃

The gearbox design process fully considers the climatic conditions of Taipei city, using weather-resistant materials and improving the lubrication passage design, enabling the gearbox to be started and operated at ambient temperatures between -20℃ and 50℃.

Maintenance-free service life of up to 1.2 million kilometers

The gearbox features high power density, low noise, high reliability, and easy maintenance. The service life of key gearbox parts is 40 years, while maintenance-free service life is up to 1.2 million kilometers.
